On Sunday, the conditions at the Red Bull Ring were perfect for Preining and his 367 kW (500 hp) Porsche 911 GT3 R: In the hands of the 24-year-old works driver, the rear-engine concept of the GT3 racing car from Weissach showed its advantages in the wet stretch full. Bernhard, who was born in Linz, in starting number 24 of Team 75, started from seventh place and worked his way up to the top with maneuvers that were worth seeing and, in his own words, were “very cool”. After 35 laps he crossed the finish line in first place with a lead of 4.640 seconds.
For Preining it was already the second win of the season, after the Austrian achieved the very first DTM triumph for the Porsche brand at the Norisring in the summer. The youngster from Porsche brand ambassador Timo Bernhard's team had already delighted the local fans in Spielberg on Saturday. In remarkable duels with the Audi driver Nico Müller (Switzerland), Preining showed himself to be determined and cold-hearted. An initially imposed time penalty was withdrawn after the race, so that in the end he was able to celebrate ten important championship points. Preining now has 116 points, just 14 fewer than the leaders. This means that the Porsche works driver still has the best chance of winning the title on the final weekend, as up to 58 points are still up for grabs in the last two races of the season at Hockenheim.
After his second win of the season and fifth place on Saturday, Preining has moved up to fourth place in the DTM drivers' standings. The Austrian scored a total of 35 points last weekend and thus significantly more than all other drivers in the popular and traditional German racing series. On October 8th and 9th, the two final races of the 2022 season are on the program at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. The event in Spielberg did not go as planned for the drivers of the Munich-based Porsche customer team SSR Performance. On Saturday Dennis Olsen and Laurens Vanthoor were eliminated, on Sunday the Spa-Francorchamps winner from Norway finished in the points in ninth place, while his Belgian team-mate finished in 16th place.
