With the T4 generation, the VW bus said goodbye to the USA and Canada 20 years ago. But he has remained a cult between New York and San Francisco to this day. The rear-engine generations T1, T2 and T3 in particular will still be part of the familiar picture of beach parking lots in California, Florida or Long Island in 2023. Now Volkswagen is closing with the extended ID. Buzz comes full circle and brings the VW bus – this time with electric rear-wheel drive – back to North America.
With a length of 4,962 mm and up to seven seats, the large ID. Buzz perfectly prepared for the start in North America. At the same time, it also expands the range of possible applications in Europe. The plus in length thanks to the 250 mm longer wheelbase creates space for a third row of seats, for up to 2,469 liters of luggage space, for a new, larger 85 kWh battery (net capacity) and thus for even more range. In winter, a new heat pump increases efficiency. In addition, the large ID. Buzz with a likewise new 210 kW electric motor (286 hp) on the market. This electric motor increases the top speed to an electronically limited 160 km/h (European ID. Buzz with 150 kW: 145 km/h). After 7.9 seconds, the large ID. Buzz 100 km/h fast. And that's not all: An all-wheel drive version (GTX) with an output of 250 kW (339 hp) has been announced for 2024. The 0-100 sprint of the ID. Buzz GTX and thus the rapid merging onto the motorway will be completed in 6.4 seconds.
Other new features of the large electric VW bus include a head-up display, a further developed next-generation infotainment system and remote parking via smartphone. Meanwhile, a newly designed high-tech panoramic roof (“Smart Glass”) evokes memories of the legendary “Samba Bus” of the 1950s. With an area of 1.5 square meters, it is the largest glass roof ever built by Volkswagen. The "smart glass" can be switched electrically from transparent to opaque and vice versa using a touch slider or voice assistant. The North American versions will also have air-conditioned seats and an illuminated VW logo on the front end.
