For its all-new hybrid-electric model, Lexus has rewrote its own rules - and interpreted many design principles in new ways. For example, the SUV's signature powerful stance on the road is partly inspired by the shape of traditional Japanese kagami mochi rice cakes - further evidence of how Lexus references the aesthetics of the past in its contemporary designs.
The team that developed the LBX was strongly encouraged to think differently - and to further develop the Lexus Next Chapter design principles that define the latest generation of NX, RX and RZ. The desire was to develop a vehicle with strong visual appeal and thus appeal to younger, urban Europeans who prefer premium quality with a casual, contemporary look and feel. The result is a Lexus that makes you feel comfortable in jeans and sneakers, while still conveying the luxurious craftsmanship and premium quality that have always characterized the brand.
Nothing makes the designers' intentions clearer than the LBX's front design, which introduces a new Lexus "face." The radiator grille, which has characterized every Lexus model for more than a decade, has become significantly smaller and merges into the body as a frameless unit.

Thanks to the compact hybrid engine, it was possible to lower the front edge of the hood to below the height of the headlights. This design ties in with the “Resolute Look” that has characterized Lexus models since the early 2000s. New details include the clever integration of the daytime running lights and indicators in a single unit. The distinctive L-shape of the headlights is now directed outwards to match the direction of the respective turn signal.
