Thanks to their compact packaging, both the five-door and the estate are real lightweights in their segment. This also helps ensure that passengers in the Astra Electric and the Astra Sports Tourer Electric can travel up to 418 kilometres and 413 kilometres (according to WLTP1) respectively without stopping – and all this while enjoying the highest level of comfort, optionally with AGR-certified ergonomic active sports seats. Drivers can choose from three drive modes – Eco, Normal and Sport.
The regenerative braking system ensures that energy can be recovered while driving. Even when the battery-electric Astra needs to be recharged, this only means a short “pit stop” at a charging point. The all-electric cars can be charged to 80 per cent of the battery capacity in less than 30 minutes at a 100 kW direct current fast charging station. In addition, each fully electric Astra is equipped as standard with a three-phase 11 kW onboard charger for the wall box at home.

The top performers in the drive portfolio of the current Astra generation are the plug-in hybrid variants. Even the “smaller” plug-in hybrid offers a system output of 133 kW (180 hp). The exemplary interaction of the combustion engine and electric motor ensures balanced performance. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine delivers 110 kW (150 hp). The electric motor contributes up to 81.2 kW (110 hp). For emissions-free operation in city traffic, the electric mode can be selected. Thanks to their 12.4 kWh battery, the plug-in hybrids can then drive up to 65 kilometres purely electrically according to WLTP1.
Especially dynamic are the top models Astra GSe and Astra Sports Tourer GSe – after all, the famous abbreviation now stands for “Grand Sport electric”. That means high performance, a sporty chassis, locally emissions-free plug-in hybrid drive and characteristic GSe design. With an impressive system output of 165 kW (225 hp) and maximum torque of 360 Nm, the Astra GSe makes a clear statement in its class. A brisk start from traffic lights and a sporty top speed are guaranteed. From a standing start, the five-door hatchback accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds (Astra Sports Tourer Electric: 7.6 seconds); a top speed of up to 235 km/h is possible (135 km/h purely electric).
In addition, with their Frequency Selective Damping technology, the GSe models set a benchmark for driver engagement. Driving electrified and saving fuel without having to change driving and operating habits or having to connect the car to a charging point: this is made possible by the Opel Astra Hybrid with 48-volt system, which has been available for a few months. The clever, cost efficient and compact 48-volt hybrid technology offers many advantages in everyday use. The drivetrain includes a lithium-ion battery that charges automatically under certain driving conditions, as well as a new 100 kW (136 hp) turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine. The three-cylinder engine was developed specifically for hybrid use and comes in combination with a new electrified six-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 21 kW (28 hp) electric motor.
The technology is especially effective in city traffic. The electric drive supports the petrol engine when accelerating and starting from a standstill. The electric motor contributes torque, especially at low engine speeds, which benefits driving dynamics and CO2 savings. At low speeds, the electric motor also enables fully electric travel for up to one kilometre or up to 50 per cent of the time driven in the city. When the Astra Hybrid slows down at higher speeds, the petrol engine switches off while the electric motor acts as a generator to recharge the 48-volt battery of the hybrid system. The optimally coordinated system is designed to always provide the best performance with the lowest energy consumption.
Astra Hybrid drivers are kept fully informed via the fully digital 10-inch driver information display. In addition to the usual information, it shows other interesting details about electrified operation. The numbers light up blue when driving purely on electric power and white when running on the combustion engine. In addition, a display shows the energy flow between the battery, petrol engine and wheels as well as the battery charge status in different colours. And the most important data on the distance travelled, journey time, average consumption, remaining range and the percentage of the route driven purely electrically is summarised when the vehicle is switched off.
