STLA AutoDrive

Stellantis NV today introduced STLA AutoDrive 1.0, the first in-house developed autonomous driving system that offers hands-free, eyes-closed functionality (SAE Level 3). STLA AutoDrive is an integral part of Stellantis’ technology strategy together with STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit, enabling improved vehicle intelligence, automation and on-board experience.

STLA AutoDrive enables autonomous driving at speeds up to 60 km/h, reducing the driver’s active role in stop-and-go traffic and freeing up valuable time in the vehicle.

Ideal for drivers in dense urban areas, STLA AutoDrive will allow drivers to spend some of their in-vehicle time doing non-driving activities, such as watching a movie, checking email, flipping through a book, or simply taking in the scenery.

“At Stellantis, helping drivers make the best use of their time is extremely important,” said Ned Curic, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Stellantis. “By managing routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making the on-board experience more efficient and enjoyable.”

The system is designed to be simple: when traffic and environmental conditions allow, the driver is notified that STLA AutoDrive is ready to go into operation. Once activated via a button, the system takes control of the vehicle, maintaining a safe distance, adjusting speed, and managing steering and braking seamlessly based on the flow of traffic.

STLA AutoDrive continuously monitors the surrounding environment through a series of sensors to ensure precise and safe driving and reliable operation even when driving in the dark or in difficult weather conditions, such as light rain. To maintain consistent performance, an automatic sensor cleaning system cleans critical components to ensure optimum reliability and functionality.

Stellantis engineers have fine-tuned STLA AutoDrive to react quickly and naturally, ensuring the system is smooth, reliable and similar to a car driven by a human in normal conditions. Whether maintaining a safe distance or adapting to heavy traffic, the system works seamlessly to ensure a safe and stress-free drive.

At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive offers the convenience of Adaptive Cruise Control and lane-keeping functions in Level 2 (hands on the wheel) and Level 2+ (hands free, eyes on the road) modes.

Designed on a scalable architecture, STLA AutoDrive is ready for deployment and can be adapted to Stellantis brand vehicles in global markets, ensuring continuous implementation depending on commercial strategies and market demand. The system is also connected to the cloud, which allows continuous improvements thanks to over-the-air updates and real-time data integration to optimize performance.

STLA AutoDrive complies with applicable regulations in supported markets and requires the driver to remain seated, belted in, and ready to take control when prompted. The system also complies with regional driver behavior laws, including restrictions on phone use.

STLA AutoDrive is designed as an evolving platform, with ongoing development and future updates potentially capable of delivering:

Hands-free, eyes-closed operation at higher speeds, up to 95 km/h.Improved off-road automation for some models. With its focus on safety, flexibility and long-term adaptability, STLA AutoDrive represents another step forward for Stellantis towards smarter, more comfortable and intuitive driving experiences.
