As a brand rich in tradition that has already experienced many historically significant moments, Bugatti has once again entered the annals of automotive history with its name. In the pursuit of innovation and top performance, three Bugatti icons have so far set top speed world records: the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Edition and the Chiron Super Sport 300+. Now another masterpiece of engineering and driving art has been achieved: the W16 Mistral World Record Car set a new top speed world record for open-top vehicles at 453.91 km/h.
The record was set on the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg GmbH test track in Germany and followed world record runs that are considered legendary in the automotive world. The record story began more than 14 years ago in June 2010 with a Veyron 16.4 Super Sport that set a record of 431.07 km/h and helped Bugatti set a historic course in its quest for unprecedented speed.
The closed-cockpit world record was broken again in 2019 by the mesmerizing Chiron Super Sport 300+ at 490.48 km/h, but even before that, Bugatti had extended its engineering prowess to open-top vehicles in the search for ever more sophisticated innovations. Three years after the memorable success of the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, a new chapter in the history books of the automotive world was opened with the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, which reached 408.84 km/h with the roof down in the face of the elements.
If you continue the Bugatti legend to the present day, the brand's world record history culminates in the attempt to surpass this feat with an open-top vehicle. Building on the successes already immortalized, the quest for another milestone in Bugatti's eventful history reached its climax after months of preparation and meticulous testing to explore the vehicle's unique capabilities.
This project culminated in Papenburg on November 9, 2024. From the customer and his guests of honor in attendance to Bugatti Rimac CEO Mate Rimac, the management team, the project team and the highly focused vehicle technicians, everyone was filled with overwhelming emotions when the driving briefing ended and the historic moment had arrived.
Andy Wallace - Bugatti Pilote Officiel and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans - took the wheel of the one-off W16 Mistral World Record Car and warmed up the car's high-performance tires on a first lap. Andy Wallace entered the banked curve at a set speed of 200 km/h and accelerated before turning onto the straight and unleashing the car's full power, enabling a new record speed. Under the careful supervision of SGS-TÜV Saar GmbH, at the end of the drive the new top speed world record for an open car was officially confirmed: Andy Wallace reached an incredible 453.91 km/h.
For the first time in Bugatti's history, the customer of the vehicle witnessed such a record-breaking event and had the opportunity to immerse themselves in an exclusive and exquisite experience throughout the weekend in honor of this momentous occasion. To underline the unique and groundbreaking nature of the event, the customer was offered the unique opportunity to accompany Andy on another high-speed run following the world record, reaching almost the same top speed - and probably setting an unofficial record for the fastest passenger ride ever.
Like every Bugatti owner, the client of the W16 Mistral World Record Car had a unique vision for his rare Bugatti collection: he wanted to own every Bugatti that had set a world record – the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Edition and the Chiron Super Sport 300+. As a unique representation of the brand, the W16 Mistral World Record Car now joins these icons in the extraordinary The Singh Collection – an impressive private automobile collection that showcases the ambitious achievements of the community from Punjab in India.
In addition to the exceptional performance of the other world record cars, another feature links the W16 Mistral World Record Car to each of its illustrious predecessors. The unique W16 Mistral World Record Car, valued at €14 million, shows its belonging to a truly unrivalled collection with distinctive accents on the lower body elements and wheels in bright "Jet Orange" - a color that evolved from the original shade of the Veyron world record cars and now characterizes the Chiron and W16 Mistral record cars - paired with a body in black exposed carbon. The spirit of this unique configuration continues in the interior, where an abundance of orange elements immerses the driver in the aura of record triumph.
