The vehicle and drive concept of the new BMW M5 Touring ensure an exceptionally multifaceted driving experience with unrestricted everyday and long-distance suitability, fascinating performance and the option of purely electric driving in city traffic and beyond. The power transmission via 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, the M xDrive all-wheel drive system and the Active M Differential, as well as the M-specific chassis technology, are precisely tailored to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive. The new BMW M5 Touring accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and impresses with outstanding elasticity values and unique precision in highly dynamic driving situations.
The new BMW M5 Touring will have its world premiere in mid-August 2024 as part of the Monterey Car Week in the US state of California. The market launch will take place in November 2024, immediately after production starts at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing. The most important markets for the new BMW M5 Touring are Germany and the USA, followed by Great Britain, Canada and Switzerland.
With a new interpretation of the M design for high-performance cars, the new BMW M5 Touring clearly expresses its racing-inspired character. A particularly high proportion of surfaces painted in the body color and a roof in solid black give it a puristic appearance that is combined with the typical proportions of a Touring model. A model-specific side frame with wide, flared wheel arches, a powerful shoulder section and a long roof line underline its athletic appearance, which clearly sets it apart from the new BMW 5 Series Touring.
The sculptural front of the vehicle is characterized by large air intakes and a newly designed BMW M kidney grille, which is highlighted by the BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting as standard. At the rear, flat lights that extend into the sides, vertical reflectors positioned far out and a two-part diffuser with integrated tailpipe pairs on the right and left emphasize the width and powerful stature of the new BMW M5 Touring.
The M HYBRID drive of the new BMW M5 Touring combines a 4.4-liter V8 engine with an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission. In addition to the latest version of the M TwinPower Turbo technology, the combustion engine has an exhaust manifold that spans all cylinder banks and optimized oil separation. It generates a maximum output of 430 kW/585 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm.
The electric motor comes from the current fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology and generates a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp. Its nominal torque of 280 Nm is increased to an effective value of 450 Nm at the transmission input using a pre-transmission ratio patented by BMW. The power of the electric motor, which is immediately available from a standstill, and the intelligently controlled interaction of both motors ensure instantaneous response and linear power delivery right up to the highest load and speed ranges. The standard top speed of 250 km/h can be increased to 305 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package.
The sports exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps ensures an emotional drive sound. Depending on the configuration and operating mode, the power development of the electric motor is also acoustically staged with the BMW IconicSounds Electric. Purely electric driving is possible at speeds of up to 140 km/h. The high-voltage battery of the new BMW M5 Touring provides a usable energy content of 18.6 kWh. This enables an electric range of 61 to 67 kilometers according to WLTP. The Combined Charging Unit charges alternating current at up to 11 kW.
The M xDrive all-wheel drive system, as well as the electronically controlled Active M differential in the rear axle transmission, is specially tailored to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive. In addition to the 4WD setting, the 4WD Sport mode can be selected via the setup menu, in which the rear-wheel-biased design of the M xDrive is particularly pronounced. For experienced drivers, the 2WD mode offers a particularly puristic performance experience with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) deactivated at the same time.
With its outstanding driving dynamics, the new BMW M5 Touring sets standards in the competitive environment. In addition to the drive system, the long wheelbase and the wide track widths, the body, which has been optimised in terms of rigidity, contributes to this. In addition to a dome bulkhead shear panel, dome front end struts and other reinforcements in the front of the car, model-specific underfloor struts including a cross bridge and a shear panel as well as other reinforcements in the luggage compartment are used at the rear.
The high-quality chassis technology of the new BMW M5 Touring includes a double wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with its own kinematics and elastokinematics. The standard equipment also includes an Adaptive M chassis with electronically controlled shock absorbers and integral active steering. The M-specific tuning, the individually selectable characteristic maps and the wheel-specific control of the shock absorbers enable optimal body connection and a maximum spread between dynamics and driving comfort. Traction, agility and driving stability benefit from the actuator-based wheel slip limitation and the networking of all control systems in the integrated lateral dynamics management.
The standard M compound brake system, which, like the optional M carbon-ceramic brake system, is combined with an integrated braking system that offers two characteristics for pedal feel and responsiveness, ensures adequate deceleration. The M light alloy wheels in sizes 20 inches on the front axle and 21 inches on the rear axle roll on high-performance tires as standard.
The new BMW M5 Touring already comes with a variety of driver assistance systems as standard, the functionality of which is further optimized by the integrated braking system and the networked lateral dynamics management. The standard equipment includes the front collision warning, the lane departure warning including lane return with steering support, the evasive action system, the attention assistant and the Speed Limit Info system.
The Driving Assistant Professional with steering and lane guidance assistant, active cruise control, automatic speed limit assist, traffic light recognition and active navigation guidance is available as an optional extra. The Parking Assistant Professional, which is also optional, enables parking and maneuvering to be controlled from outside the vehicle using a smartphone.
The M-specific control panel on the center console offers numerous options for customizing the driving experience. The setup button provides direct access to the settings for the drive, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system, M xDrive and the intensity of recuperation. Two individually configured vehicle setups can be called up using the M buttons on the steering wheel.
The M Dynamic Mode, which regulates the stability control, is also activated at the touch of a button. It is also possible to deactivate the DSC completely. The M Mode button is used to configure the displays and driver assistance systems. In SPORT mode, the interventions of the assistance systems and the display contents of the information and BMW Head-Up Display are limited to the functions essential for sporty driving. In conjunction with M Drive Professional, the TRACK mode is also available. This option also includes the M Laptimer and the Boost Control function for particularly dynamic spurts.
The M HYBRID button can also be used to individually configure the operating mode of the drive system. While the basic Hybrid setting coordinates the interaction of both motors, the Electric mode is used for purely electric driving. The eControl mode enables targeted recuperation or maintaining the battery charge level at a constant level. In addition, the Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes are available as part of the M Drive Professional, which condition the cooling system and the drive for constantly high or briefly maximum performance on country roads or the race track.
The driver-oriented cockpit of the new BMW M5 Touring conveys authentic racing flair with a redesigned M leather steering wheel, M multifunction seats, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display and the standard BMW Head-Up Display. The Merino leather upholstery, the BMW Interaction Bar, 4-zone automatic climate control, M-specific interior lighting with welcome staging and a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System contribute to an exclusive premium ambience. Optional extras include a heated steering wheel, active seat ventilation and a panoramic glass roof. From spring 2025, additional luxurious accents can be set with the BMW Individual Metallic Leather Merino equipment.
