At 88.8 percent, the large crossover model achieved the highest score of all new vehicles tested by Euro NCAP in 2020/21. The extended Eyesight assistance system, which is part of the standard scope of the sixth model generation, makes a decisive contribution to the flagship's high level of safety.
Whether it's the occupant protection of adults and children, the assistance systems or vulnerable road users: the Outback clearly exceeds the minimum requirements in all four areas and thus secures the top rating of five stars. The new edition scored more points in the crash test conducted by the independent testing organization Euro NCAP than any other vehicle tested in the past two years. The Japanese automobile brand is thus impressively underscoring its safety philosophy: through constant improvements, there should be no more fatal traffic accidents involving Subaru vehicles by 2030.
Advanced assistance systems play a decisive role on this path. The Outback is the first Subaru model to feature the expanded Eyesight system, whose working range has been further increased by the stereo camera now mounted directly on the upper windshield. Dangers and obstacles can thus be identified even earlier, which means that the system can warn and intervene sooner.
The Outback scored the highest scores across all vehicle classes for both assistance systems (95 percent) and vulnerable road users (84 percent) - no other Subaru model has ever scored more points. Euro NCAP summarizes this in its 2021 Flashback Report: “The tests showed large differences in the results of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The Subaru Outback scored best with 95 percent of the points - thanks to highly developed emergency braking, lane departure warning, speed and attention systems."

In the fourth generation, which is now based on 30 years of research and development work, Eyesight includes not only an emergency braking system with collision warning and an intersection function, but also, for the first time, an avoidance assistant with an active steering function that helps when avoiding obstacles safely, lane centering and an active lane departure warning system that, in addition to lane markings, also recognizes natural boundaries such as turf. Other Eyesight components include a start-up assistant, traffic sign recognition with an intelligent speed limiter that compares your own speed with the traffic signs, and adaptive cruise control that maintains the speed and distance from road users ahead.
The safety equipment of the Outback is completed by a standard lane change, blind spot and cross traffic assistant as well as the rear emergency braking system, which warns of collisions when reversing. The driver recognition system notices distraction and tiredness and warns the driver to pay attention. Front and reversing cameras as well as the side monitor simplify both changing lanes and maneuvering in the smallest of spaces.
If an accident does occur, the Subaru Global Platform protects. The vehicle architecture on which all new Subaru models are based not only increases driving stability, but also safety and rigidity. In conjunction with a reinforced frame, additional auxiliary beams and the increased use of high-strength steel, the level of protection in front, side and rear collisions is improved by 40 percent.
