After Volkswagen's successful model had already been awarded five stars in 2019 according to the Euro NCAP standard applicable at the time, the Golf now also demonstrated convincing safety levels in the modified test procedure that has been in force since 2020. Although the previous assessment was still valid for three years, Volkswagen decided to bring its successful model up to date in terms of safety and to subject it to the test procedure based on currently valid and significantly stricter standards. 14 of the 21 tests had been re-run using the modified procedure – with success.
An important safety feature is the new center airbag for the front seats, which is now standard on the Golf. In the event of a side collision, it helps to prevent possible head contact between the people in the first row of seats. An additional standard lap belt tensioner for the front row of seats increases safety even further. In the "occupant protection for adults" category, the compact, successful model achieved an excellent score of 88 percent of the possible rating points. The Golf scored 87 percent for "Child Protection".
In the area of "assistance systems", the Golf impressed with 79 percent of the possible rating points. Among other things, the autonomous emergency braking system (AEB) performed well in tests for reacting to other vehicles. The driver warning system (attendance assistant) and the turning assistant, both of which are part of the standard equipment, also had a positive effect on the result. In addition to vehicle occupant protection, Euro NCAP also examines how well automatic emergency braking systems can protect vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists) in the event of an imminent collision. In this category, the Golf, which is equipped as standard with the Front Assist emergency braking system, achieved a result of 74 percent. Volkswagen is thus underscoring its high safety standards and continuing its series of successes at Euro NCAP: In March 2022, the ID.5, the Polo and the Taigo were awarded five stars. The ID.4 had previously achieved the highest Euro NCAP rating in April 2021 and the compact ID.3 in October 2020. In 2019, the T-Cross was also awarded the top mark in addition to the Golf.
